Is Gambling Wrong?

Q. Is gambling wrong? They cast lots in the Bible. There is no scripture that specifically condemns it.

A. While “Thou shalt not gamble” is not explicitly stated in the Bible, it is wrong for a child of God to gamble. There is no verse that clearly condemns smoking tobacco, but it is still improper to smoke cigarettes or a cigar. Smoking and gambling both violate biblical principles. If God wants to bless you, He does not have to use a game of poker, or craps, or the state lottery. In fact, His sovereignty is so complete that He probably would not allow one of His children to win at roulette or other games of chance.

Gambling is addictive. Children of God should avoid any potentially-addictive habit. See I Corinthians 6:19.

Also, gambling is an expression of covetousness. It is a desire for financial reward without bestowing labor. Covetousness, of course is forbidden (i.e., Colossians 3:5; Hebrews 13:5).

Importantly, most committed Christians consider gambling to be wrong, a vice. It robs the poor. Because our brothers and sisters consider it wrong, we would never do it. See Romans 14:19-20.
